As we head into the Holiday Season, many of us, like myself, look for quick and easy meals as this becomes one of the busiest times of the year due to end-of-the-year work goals and holiday commitments. It’s crucial for me to find nourishing meals in order to keep my energy level and focus up, however, sometimes that can be really difficult when time is limited and healthy frozen options are scarce.

That’s why I’d like to share with you my top 4 tips on how to pick a frozen meal that’s actually healthy!

1. Check to see how much protein is in the meal.

Protein is an essential macronutrient in our diet. It helps to keep our blood sugar levels stable, builds muscle and protects our gut, just to name a few. I always check to see how much protein is in a frozen meal because if it’s less than 5 grams, then this indicates that there may be a lot of unnecessary ingredients in there instead of the real deal. This is why I love Evive’s Tom Thaï. It has 12 grams of plant-based protein in just one wheel (yes, one!!) which comes from the sunflower seeds and edamame. This makes me feel confident that this quick and nutrient-dense meal will keep me fuller for longer.

2. Verify how much fibre is in the meal.

Fibre helps to pull toxins from the body while also stabilizing our blood sugar levels. On average, we should be getting about 45 grams of fibre each day, but, unfortunately, most of us aren’t even getting 20 grams. If you struggle to get fibre into your diet, add a few more servings of fruits and vegetables into your diet or try Evive’s Bam Chili! This frozen lunch has 7 grams of fibre in each wheel, which is incredible for a ready-made meal. Once you add your Bam Chili with rice, cauliflower rice or quinoa, you’ll be looking at over 10 grams of fibre for this meal.

3. Analyze at the ingredient list.

This is probably one of the most important tips I could ever give! Read the ingredient list carefully and try to imagine what every single ingredient looks like outside of that package. When I go through the ingredients of Tom Thaï, Bam Chili and Mac Squash, I can picture every individual ingredient and I know that they are all incredibly nutritious. If you’re having a hard time understanding what the ingredient is, this may be a good indicator that it is not a clean product.

4. Make sure the sugar content is low.

You would be surprised to see how many freezer meals are actually jam-packed with sugar, and I don’t mean the natural sugars which are coming from fruits or vegetables. Many products out on the market will actually have added powdered sugar in their meals to enhance the product. I love Mac Squash because not only is it low in sugar (6 grams for the whole wheel) but the sugars are coming from the most natural and beautiful vegetables like squash and carrots.

I hope you feel more comfortable now that you have this list of tips for freezer made meal shopping! Remember to use code JASS15 to save $15 off of your first online order of Evive lunches and smoothies!

In July, we launched our new special edition Bloom smoothie with the wonderful Karine Vanasse. We are extremely proud that our first Evive smoothie that’s been developed in collaboration with a public figure is with none other than Karine Vanasse! The award-winning Canadian actress inspires us to unapologetically flourish as women while taking time for ourselves and our well-being. That’s why she was the perfect match for Bloom.

Made with juicy cherries, hibiscus, ground cherries and vegan probiotics, Bloom will surely please you as much as Karine loved developing it with us. If you haven’t already, make sure you experience this incredible flavour that’s available for a limited time only!

1. What made you want to collaborate with Evive?

It’s been part of my routine for several years now. I was sold on the concept and the quality of the products already since my training for Blue Moon. It’s a habit that I’ve had for several years and that I’ve kept even while being pregnant and after my childbirth. Having fresh food that’s accessible at all times was super convenient as well during the quarantine.

2. What is the meaning behind the name of the Bloom smoothie? What does Bloom represent to you?

To me, Bloom represents blossoming, blooming – symbolically representing growth. But above all, it represents the desire to take care of one’s own well-being; which in turn allows us to be at our state of maximum potential.

Start with yourself, and then share your gifts to the world with gentle kindness.

3. Which part of the collaboration did you enjoy the most?

Discovering and meeting the Evive team and getting the confirmation of what I already felt from this company: the real desire to help people live a healthier life, to support people to maintain a balanced lifestyle through the means of truly high-quality products.

4. What was your favourite moment during the Bloom photoshoot?

The pictures with Claudia 😊. In the workplace environment, solidarity is important. I felt a joint pride in presenting a product with the conviction that it can make a difference in people’s lives.

5. What have been some of your greatest life accomplishments?

The collaborations created with my entourage, which last over time, personally and professionally. No longer doing what people would like me to do, but doing what I truly want and believe in. To have the chance to be surrounded with enough solidity to be able to have a discussion and make decisions that are closer to my values.

These would be, I think, my greatest accomplishments.

6. What does your wellness routine look like? Do you have specific rituals?

I would like to say that it never changes, but that’s not the reality!! It evolves over time, according to what’s happening in my life. Nowadays, I think I’m more at peace with accepting that it changes. I remain open to adopting new routines to make myself feel better, which I also enjoy remaining curious about. Even so, I do have a foundation that remains which I’ve acquired: drinking lots of water, and my skincare regimen. Good digestive health is important to me too and I’m happy to be talking about it with Bloom. The gut is the second brain, we’re starting to become more aware of this reality, but I’m proud to be able to bring this information forward!

7. How do you consume your Bloom smoothie?

In the morning, or as a late afternoon reward!

It seems this flavour helps wake me up – and my taste buds too! 😊

This summer, I’ve been adding water to it, but this fall I’ll be consuming it more with plant-based milk. I’ll definitely stock up before it’s gone!!

Thank you so much, Karine, for this incredible interview. I’m so grateful I got the opportunity to collaborate with you for the Bloom smoothie!

Raise your hands if you’re absolutely STOKED about this season’s beautiful weather! I’m sitting here, flailing my arms because I am thrilled with the amount of sun we’ve been getting!

Our little family is absolutely ready for this year’s summer season. We set up an inflatable pool (that my son adores!). We’ve been taking daily walks and creating pieces of sidewalk chalk art on our driveway. For our family, summer is all about spending time outside, splashing around, and indulging in yummy (and healthy!) kid-friendly snacks. Check out some of the snacks we’ve been munching on lately (psst: some of them use Evive smoothie blends, so be sure to use the code FABULOUSHABITS15 for $15 off your next box!).

1) Frozen Fruit

This is one of my simplest mom hacks – but super effective.

Rather than going for processed, sugar-filled popsicles and freeze pops, I wash and freeze fresh fruit for many of our afternoon snacks. It’s a quick solution that our family loves. On a hot summer day, nothing is more refreshing than a bowl full of yummy frozen fruits.

2) Trail Mix Buffet

Trail mixes really take me back to my childhood. When I was a Brownie (ie.: Girl Guide), we used to make our own trail mixes for nature walks. The experience always stuck with me and now, I do the same for my son.

I suggest building a “Trail Mix Buffet” for you and your little ones! Set up your kitchen counter with bowls of nuts, granola, raisins, shredded coconut, etc. You can then ask everyone to scoop their own servings so that they can create a personalized trail mix!

3) Banana Split with Evive Nice Cream

Photos by Lisa Favre

What’s summer without indulging in a delicious banana split? Some of my fondest memories are going to the local ice cream shop with my parents and sharing a huge banana split with them.

Today, I’ve got a delicious recipe for a healthy, homemade banana split – and it uses Evive smoothies! How cool is that?!

You’ll need:

– 1 Azteque wheel (or your choice of Evive flavour)
– 2 frozen bananas, sliced
– 3 tbsp almond milk
– 1 fresh banana
– Optional toppings: Canned pineapple pieces, dark chocolate chips, shredded coconut, natural peanut butter, etc.

Add smoothie cubes and frozen banana slices into a large bowl and thaw for 10 minutes.

Add to a blender or food processor, followed by almond milk. Pulse/blend until you achieve a thick, creamy consistency.

Cut a fresh banana in half, lengthwise and place on your serving plate.

Scoop the nice cream into the serving plate, right between your banana halves. Top with desired garnishes like pineapple pieces, chocolate chips, coconut and natural peanut butter.

4) Fruit Platter

As you can see, we’re all about fresh fruits when it comes to summer snacking. One of our family’s favourites is our take on a fruity “charcuterie” board.

Basically, I put in-season fruits on a large plate, with a small bowl of peanut butter in the center. I have so much fun with the set-up, and it’s pretty interactive for my toddler!

5) Frozen Fruit Cups

Photos by Lisa Favre

Sometimes, keeping little ones interested in food involves lots of creativity.

My frozen fruit cups are colourful and heart-shaped, so my little guy is always more inclined to snack on them!

To make frozen fruit cups, you’ll need:

– A heart-shaped silicone pan
– 1 ½ cups granola
– ¼ cup natural peanut butter
– 1 wheel of your favourite Evive flavour
– 240 ml of water
– ¼ cup of your favourite berries (blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries
etc.

In a bowl, mix together granola and peanut butter.

Add granola mixture at the bottom of each heart-shaped section of your silicone pan. Pack down and spread it out – these will act as the base of your fruit cups.

In a bowl, allow the frozen Evive cubes and water to melt together. Mix thoroughly.

Evenly pour the Evive smoothie mixture into each section of the silicone pan. Top off with your favourite berries.

Freeze overnight and pop out of the moulds and serve!

We hope your family has a fun and healthy summer season! Out of these snacks, which ones do you think will be your kiddos’ faves?!

Don’t forget, if you use code FABULOUSHABITS15, you’ll get $15 off your next Evive box! Enjoy!

It’s finally summertime, which means more coloured produce is in season! I personally like to encourage all of my clients to shop in season, and summer makes it that much easier. Are you aware of all the benefits of eating the rainbow? We often hear how important our leafy greens are, but that’s not the only colour you want to be consuming! Each colour of the food we eat actually serves a nutritional purpose. The colours allow us to understand what antioxidants and benefits are in the vegetable and fruit.

Let’s break it down into 3 categories: red, green, and orange.

Red🌶 🍓🍅

Red and pink pigmented fruits and vegetables like red peppers, raspberries, and tomatoes are high in the antioxidants lycopene and anthocyanins. These are known for protecting the heart and killing off free radicals! Lycopene can also be super beneficial to men who struggle with prostate health. Red containing fruits and vegetables are also a great source of quercetin, which is important for those who have allergies. Quercetin can help reduce allergic reactions, even for those with seasonal allergies, so make sure to add a few strawberries into your diet if you struggle with allergies!

Also, keep in mind that the more pigmented a vegetable or fruit is, the higher the antioxidant capacity is! Think about how careful you have to be with beets! They are super pigmented and because of that, their nutrient capacity is so high! Evive’s Samouraï has to be one of my absolute favourite smoothies, and you will know this if you watch my stories over at @nourishwithjass! This blend of beautiful deep reds ensures that I am getting in all of the phytonutrients I need to boost my energy, support my iron intake and feel satiated. Plus, it’s super delicious!

Green🥦🍐🥑

Green vegetables like spinach, kale and celery are a great source of vitamin C, vitamin E, folate and fibre. Green vegetables are also super high in potassium, and yes, you can get potassium from other sources than bananas. All vegetables are a great source of potassium, so if you do eat tons of veggies, just make sure to also add in some sea salt into the diet so you can balance out the two correctly. Pure and Yogi from Evive are the most perfect green smoothies you will ever come across! Did you know they are low in sugar and only made with the most real and raw ingredients? That’s a huge YES for me! I incorporate Pure into my diet at least twice a week because it truly just makes me feel so good!

Orange🍊🥕🍑

We all know that orange and yellow coloured fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamin C, but did you know there were so many other benefits? Due to their deep pigmentation, orange coloured produce can be a great boost for eye and heart health. These powerful pops of colour can help reduce inflammation as they are filled with tons of incredible vitamins and antioxidants. These delicious fruits and veggies can also reduce free radicals in the body. Lastly, orange fruits and vegetables help with collagen formation. In order for collagen to be utilized in the body, it needs vitamin C to facilitate absorption. So, if you are taking a collagen supplement, make sure to add an orange-rich smoothie, like Evive’s Mango Passion or Orange Peach into your day!

I always recommend that my clients have at least two different colours of vegetables on their plate each day. This helps you get nutrients from a wide range of delicious produce to promote healthy bodies. Plus, your plate will look a lot happier with a few more colours in there! If you don’t know where to start, I would recommend an Evive smoothie as mentioned above or you could even start with a simple salad mixed with tons of vegetables!

The next time you are at the grocery store, ask yourself what other colours you can add to your cart. Make grocery shopping more fun and easy!

You’ve probably heard the expression; “Your body is a temple.” It’s simple but it’s so true. Our body is made up of trillions of cells, and they’re all working extremely intelligently together. Our bodies carefully listen to our thoughts, which is why it’s so important to pay attention to our levels of stress. It’s a constant sponge that has the ability to detoxify itself if we prioritize our health and well-being. Eating well, getting in a good amount of exercise, and taking time to do the things we love and connect with our loved ones is what maintains the beautiful vessel that is our body.

In order to polish our temple and make it glow from the inside out, certain foods are recommended. Superfoods are essentially foods that are high in nutrients and can especially be beneficial for our health and well-being!

The more I’ve learned about superfoods, the more I found it absolutely essential to include them as ingredients in each and every one of Evive’s smoothies.

– Claudia Poulin, Evive Co-Founder

Without further ado, here are the star superfoods and their main benefits found in our favourite summer smoothies:

Viva’s Superfood Ingredient: Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds are an incredibly healthy superfood that provides our bodies with so many benefits! They are rich in healthy fats and essential fatty acids and are a complete source of protein which means they’re a good source of energy and helps us feel full for an extended amount of time. They also can reduce the risk of heart disease and help relieve dry skin! It was a no-brainer to include hemp seeds in the Viva smoothie.

Saphir’s Superfood Ingredient: Blue Spirulina

Ever wondered which ingredient gives our Saphir smoothie its gorgeous blue hue? It’s blue spirulina! Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that grows in both salt and freshwater. It may be one of the most nutrient-dense foods on earth, so it’s incredibly healthy! It has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can even improve our bodies’ muscle strength and endurance! I’m so grateful that our refreshing Saphir is a best-seller and that so many people can benefit from this wonderful superfood.

Samouraï’s Superfood Ingredient: Chia Seeds

Chia seeds have become a popular superfood and it’s no surprise! Did you know that almost all the carbs in them are fibre? That’s amazing! It’s also been noted that the high fibre and protein content in chia seeds may help you lose weight. On top of that, they contain nutrients that are essential for our bone health. All in all, it was a must for me to include chia seeds in the Samouraï’s recipe.

Touk-Touk’s Superfood Ingredient: Turmeric

Our tropical Touk-Touk smoothie contains this ancient Indian superfood that is an important spice and medicinal herb. Turmeric contains curcumin, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This means that it stimulates our bodies’ own antioxidant enzymes and neutralizes free radicals. It’s also so appropriate that this sunshine smoothie’s superfood can boost our brains’ neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine which has incredible benefits against depression!

If it’s the first time you’re discovering Evive’s smoothies, make sure to check out our current summer trial box that includes all 4 smoothies above! Wishing you a healthy and fresh summer full of superfoods! 😉 🥭

Whenever I prepare a smoothie for myself, it’s important to me that the recipe includes vegetables. I ensure that I’m eating complete plant-based meals that include all the nutrients our bodies need. I’m proud that all of Evive’s smoothie blends include high-quality ingredients such as organic fruits, vegetables, superfoods, and plant-based protein. In addition, they are GMO-free without any added sugar!

You would be surprised by the wholesome list of ingredients found in your favourite Evive smoothie. Although they include so many vegetables and superfoods, you’ll be savouring them without even tasting all the vegetables you’re consuming! This is especially a bonus for kids who usually aren’t fans of veggies. What’s better than finding a subtle way to get in all those important vitamins and minerals that boost our immune system!

Discover the hidden vegetable in 4 of our smoothies below and the health benefits they bring to your body:

Saphir’s Hidden Vegetable: Cauliflower

The Saphir is famously known as our blue smoothie that kids adore. This blue delight is naturally coloured with blue spirulina! Cauliflower is the superstar here, which is filled with so many essential nutrients like choline! Choline is an essential nutrient that many people are actually deficient in. It positively affects our brain function and the health of our nervous system.

Yogi’s Hidden Vegetable: Kale

Not many people enjoy eating this mighty green monster – aka KALE! But Kale is so versatile and has many benefits. Kale is celebrated for being high in fibre & protein, and rich in vitamins A, C, & K! Enjoy it effortlessly in our Yogi smoothie, along with other ingredients such as banana and pear.

L’article Plant-Based & Strong: Your 101 Protein Guide est apparu en premier sur Evive Blog.

]]>
A lot of us may look at protein and think that we need to be working out or physically active in order to really need it on our diet. However, the reality is that we all actually need it in moderate amounts for a variety of reasons. Protein is incredibly important to build muscle and maintain strength and this goes for those who either are working out constantly or not at all. Moreover, it’s a misconception that people who eat plant-based can’t possibly be getting enough protein or aren’t physically strong enough to compete with people who eat animal products. You’ll learn why in this 101 protein guide!

Why is protein so important in your diet?

One of the most important roles that protein plays in the body is that it actually helps to balance those blood sugar levels. Protein does not break down in the body like sugar does, as excess sugar causes us to crash. This is something we want to stay on top of as an imbalance of blood sugar levels can lead to a variety of symptoms like low energy, headaches, brain fog, weight gain or loss, and anxiety. When we get adequate amounts of protein in our diet, we can notice a more sustainable energy level in our bodies pretty quickly.

What’s the essential daily quantity of protein needed?

The good news is that protein can be found in so many plant-based foods and you may already be getting in a good amount! I always recommend at least 15-20 grams of protein per meal. It may sound like a lot, but just one wheel of Evive’s Cashew Mocha or Blueberry Haskap has 18 grams of plant-based protein in it! This means you only have to worry about your next two meals.

How do I incorporate protein in a plant-based diet?

Some of my favourite plant-based sources of protein are black beans and chickpeas. These have 7 grams of protein in just 1/2 a cup! You can simply add these into a nourishing salad or in your soup. I also am a huge fan of lentils because they actually have 9 grams of protein in just 1/2 of a cup and are extremely versatile. If you notice that you get bloated from beans or lentils, try soaking the dry legume in water for a few hours (even overnight) before cooking them. This helps to make the legumes more digestible.

If you find that you are too sensitive to these sources, I would recommend a pea protein. Pea proteins are a lot easier for the body to digest. Those who struggle with digesting beans, often have much better success with pea protein. Luckily, this is the protein that is used in Evive’s smoothies, along with other forms like edamame, cashew and spirulina

Other super easy sources of protein are chia seeds and hemp hearts. These little seeds are packed with protein, fibre and healthy fats to further help balance those blood sugar levels. I love adding mine to salads and to my Evive Smoothies.

Lastly, if you follow me on Instagram, you will know that I am a huge fan of spirulina! This has to be my absolute favourite source of protein because it also has a ton of different benefits. One that I have really been able to notice is just how nourishing it’s been for my skin. In one teaspoon, spirulina contains 3 grams of protein! If you’re looking to get some spirulina into your day, make sure you stock up on my favourite Evive Smoothie, the Saphir. This is a weekly staple for me! If you still feel like you are not getting enough protein in your day, try consuming an Extra Protein Evive Smoothie to increase your intake. I would highly recommend the Extra Protein smoothies particularly as your breakfast so you can sustain your energy levels for the day and stay sharp! I promise that this is a habit you’ll want to keep in your routine!

There’s still a common stigma that frozen products are automatically considered less healthy or less “fresh”. Actually, here at Evive, we’re proving every day that frozen is the new fresh.

Did you know that the organic frozen fruits and vegetables in our smoothies are actually filled with more nutrients and flavour than if you were to consume them from the grocery store? Due to the fact that the produce in most grocery stores was picked even before it was ripe, this reduces its nutritive qualities. Consuming Evive’s organic, frozen fruits and veggies means that they were picked at their optimal time!

How is everyone’s new routine going at home? If you’re like me, you like to snack a lot. While adapting to the slower pace at home and all the additional time spent inside, it’s very easy to lose control of your snacking. A reason to be over-snacking during this time could stem from emotional eating – meaning eating as a way to comfort ourselves from stress. Another reason could be that we aren’t eating enough full meals. As a result, we tend to reach for sugary snacks to feel satisfied. Here are a few tips to help you curb your sugar cravings and control your snacking habits:

Tip #1: Be mindful. Start noticing what you consume that has added sugar.

Is there a certain time of day or setting where you experience a sugar itch? It’s important to be mindful. Perhaps you might notice an emotional attachment to your sugar craving. For example, a moment during the day when you felt stressed (emotional) or a moment when you felt tired (nutrient depleted).

Tip #2: Snack smarter & implement healthy swaps.

As soon as you get a craving for something sweet, eat healthy fat or protein. Why? Wholesome fat and protein fill us up. Your sugar cravings will be stopped in their tracks! But, of course, don’t go overboard with fat, especially processed fat like chips.

By cutting out snacking entirely, this can cause us to feel mentally and psychologically deprived, which can backfire our well-being! This is why it’s easier to replace your cravings with something healthier.

Tip #3: Reduce spikes in your blood sugar level.

Sugary snacks take us on the blood sugar rollercoaster ride. We all know that this rollercoaster is a dangerous one to be on, so be conscious of spikes in your blood sugar level. When you mix sugar with fibre, healthy fats, or protein, you’re actually slowing down the absorption of sugar in your blood. This means you won’t experience sugar spikes!

Tip #4: Be wary of snacks with hidden sugars.

Did you know that some cereals have more than double the amount of added sugar than a slice of chocolate cake?! Remember – added sugar can easily be hidden in lots of products you might not have considered. It’s important to take the time to properly read a product’s ingredient list and nutritional table. If you’re curious about how the different types of sugar affect your body, read more here.

Since we don’t quite know yet when we’ll be able to leave our homes, we have to adapt to this new reality in the healthiest way possible. In the next few weeks, it’s important to establish a healthy routine and return to our good eating habits! To help you, we’ve created a guide that condenses all the information from our past 21-Day Sugar-Free Challenge. Download the PDF below for more tips and tricks on how to gradually reduce your sugar consumption and break the vicious cycle!
